Will Power is second at the Grand Prix of Alabama, while Scott McLaughlin survives the opening lap chaos

Will Power of Australia finished second in the season-opening IndyCar race in Alabama, while Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin finished 14th after narrowly avoiding a first-lap crash.

Alex Palou, who won his first IndyCar race, finished less than half a second behind Power.

On the first lap of the season, chaos reigned, removing a number of drivers who were expected to compete for the championship this year.

Josef Newgarden of Penske ran wide exiting turn three, spinning him around and scattering the chasing pack in all directions.

Ryan Hunter-Reay and Colton Herta of Andretti Autosport were left with nowhere to go and collided with Newgarden, while Felix Rosenqvist’s McLaren was temporarily airborne, and Carlin’s Max Chilton was also injured.

“I got loose coming over the hill and then touched the grass. I think once I touched the grass I’m basically sideways,” said Newgarden, a two-time series champion and last year’s runner-up. “I feel really bad for anyone who got involved in that. Obviously my mess created a bigger mess, so any of the cars that got involved I’m really sorry because it was us that tipped it off.”

Herta, who finished third last year in the championship, was philosophical about the early blow to his title hopes, noting that there are still 16 races left.
