IndyCar will use new safety technology starting in 2021

The NTT IndyCar Series has teamed up with EM Motorsport to supply new safety technology that will help provide data about the forces acting on cars and drivers following a crash more quickly and accurately.

IndyCar will receive new Accident Data Recorders (ADR) and Ear Plug Accelerometers from EM Motorsport, which provides electronic safety devices for series and events such as Formula 1, Formula 2, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and others (EPA).

Internal accelerometers and gyroscopes, as well as a Controller Area Network (CAN) interface, are used by the ADR system to capture “at the scene” accident data. This will enhance post-race crash analysis as well as future safety research. The new ADR system, which is smaller and lighter than the one now used by IndyCar, is located under the driver’s seat in the center balance of the car.

The EPA is a small device that will fit inside the driver’s ear plugs and transmit information about the driver’s condition during a crash. The device’s data collecting will include the driver’s radio communications as well as an accelerometer that will detect the driver’s head’s speed and movement during the collision.

After successful tests throughout the 2020 season, IndyCar decided to use the ADR and EPA systems, adding yet another quick addition to the championship’ growing safety measures. The series debuted the Red Bull-designed aeroscreen to great success in the 2020 season.

This collaboration will also assist EM Motorsport in continuing to develop new safety solutions for other world-class championships. IndyCar’s data, as well as those from other series, will help EM to determine which areas of safety technology still need to be improved.

The Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, held on April 18, 2021 at Barber Motorsports Park, will have these devices in the cars for the first race of the season.
