Denny Hamlin has secured a spot in the 2021 NASCAR Playoffs

Denny Hamlin has qualified for the 2021 NASCAR Playoffs.

The winner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course by AJ Allmendinger, a non-playoff eligible driver, secured a berth for the driver of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. Hamlin finished 23rd in Sunday’s Verizon 200 at the Brickyard, the season’s 24th race, but he almost won when contact with Chase Briscoe with two laps to go sent him spinning from the lead.

Even without a win, Hamlin began the inaugural race tied for the most points in the NASCAR Cup Series — 917 with Kyle Larson. When it came to the playoff picture, Hamlin was 302 points ahead of the final place, and with that kind of cushion, he was the only driver capable of clinching entirely on points. A win would have done the trick, too.

Hamlin has qualified for the NASCAR Playoffs 15 times already, including every season in which he did not miss multiple races. The current four-round format was introduced in 2014.

Hamlin went all the way to the Championship 4 last season. He finished fourth in the final standings after placing fourth in the title race at Phoenix Raceway. In 2014 and 2019, Hamlin also made it to the Championship 4. He was eliminated in the Round of 8 in 2016-17. In 2015, he was eliminated in the Round of 12, and in 2018, he was eliminated in the Round of 16.

In 2010, Hamlin finished second in the NASCAR Cup Series, his best-ever finish in the series standings.

The FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway next Sunday (3 p.m. ET on NBCSN/NBC Sports App, MRN, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) is the first of two regular-season races remaining. The Coke Zero Sugar 400 will take place on August 28 at Daytona International Speedway (7:30 p.m. ET on NBC/NBC Sports App, MRN, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Hamlin has won in Michigan twice and Daytona three times.
