Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A. is the motorcycle division of the Bologna-based Italian company Ducati. The corporation is owned by Lamborghini’s German parent company, Audi, which is a member of the Volkswagen Group.
In 2003, Ducati returned to Grand Prix motorcycle racing after a 30-year absence. On September 23, 2007, Casey Stoner and Ducati won their first Grand Prix World Championship. The rules had been changed to allow four-stroke 990 cc engines to participate when Ducati returned to MotoGP in 2003. At the time, the Ducati was the fastest motorcycle on the market. In 2007, the engine size in MotoGP was reduced to 800 cc (49 cu in), and Ducati remained the fastest with a machine that was significantly faster than its opponents, as Casey Stoner demonstrated on long straights.
In 2009, Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden rode the Desmosedici GP9 for the Ducati Marlboro Team. Mika Kallio and Niccol Canepa rode for Pramac Racing in 2009, and the team used Ducati customer bikes.
In 2011 and 2012, Valentino Rossi, a nine-time world champion, rode for Ducati Corse. Rossi returned to the Yamaha team for the 2013 season.
