Kevin Magnussen will compete at Le Mans 2021 with his father Jan

Kevin Magnussen will compete in the LMP2 class at this year’s Le Mans with his father and fellow ex-F1 driver Jan.

After son Kevin confirmed that he’ll be sharing a car with his father and fellow former Formula One driver Jan at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Magnussens have decided to keep it in the family.

The father-son racing duo will participate as a team for the first time at La Sarthe, driving an Oreca LMP2 car for High Class Racing. Anders Fjordbach will round out the lineup, making it an all-Danish effort.

Kevin, who retired from Formula One at the end of 2020 after six seasons, is now pursuing a career in sportscar racing with Chip Ganassi Racing, crossing the Atlantic to compete in the US IMSA championship.

He’s also been announced as a driver for Peugeot’s Le Mans Hypercar team in 2023, and he’ll no likely be aiming to get some laps in at Le Mans before moving up to the top class.

After a lot of seasons fighting at the back of the F1 grid with Haas, the younger Magnussen spoke to Motor Sport in January about his joy at “finally racing to win” after a number of seasons fighting at the back of the F1 grid with Haas.

Father Jan has almost two decades of endurance racing experience, winning four times in the GT1 class for Corvette. After one and a half challenging seasons in Formula One with Stewart, he moved to sportscar racing.

The Magnussens will be attempting to improve on past father-son combinations at Le Mans: Nigel Mansell’s DNF in 2010 with his sons Leo and Greg, and Martin Brundle’s eighth place finish in the LMP2 class in 2012.
