Kevin Magnussen was offered a contract extension in Formula One for 2021

Kevin Magnussen, a former Haas F1 Team and McLaren F1 Team driver, will spend his 2021 season with Chip Ganassi Racing in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship.

Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin will lead the Haas F1 Team, which he has been with since 2017, in an all-rookie lineup. Magnussen, on the other hand, could have had a different result. He recently revealed that he had an offer to stay in Formula One for 2021 provided he was willing to move to another team.

Magnussen has been somewhat scant on the details regarding this offer to remain in Formula 1. Despite the fact that no specific team was mentioned, the Danish driver joked that it was for a team that was “not better than Haas.” In an interview with the Danish magazine Dossier, he is reported to have stated this.

As one might assume, speculation has already begun as to which team Magnussen was talking to. It’s also not difficult to figure out which team he was talking to: Williams finished tenth and last in 2020, collecting no constructors’ points (the first time this has happened in the team’s history), while Haas finished tenth.

If it really was Williams, Magnussen clearly understands the implications of being a bit too open about the team’s nightmarish 2020 season; he definitely had his tongue fairly in cheek when he remarked that “I can not say who it was, because maybe someone is angry.“

In the interview, Magnussen added that “although I had a chance to stay in Formula 1, I did not have the motivation to continue that way. I would have liked to continue if I could have won with any of the big teams.” Magnussen’s career has been marked by the fact that he was never able to break into a big Formula One team.

“It’s hard to know how things are going to go,” Magnussen said earlier this year. “When I started my F1 career in Melbourne 2014, I had pretty high expectations. I thought I was going to be fighting for the championship in my first year after that first race. You can’t ever predict how things are going to go in Formula 1. You’ve just got to do the best, and enjoy it while it lasts.“

Would Magnussen have benefited from taking a Williams offer? Possibly. From 2022, the team will use more Mercedes components in its cars, and the budget cap should allow the Grove-based outfit to become more competitive. But, like with anything speculative, we’ll never know for sure.
