Formula 1, Nico Hulkenberg: “The chance to return to F1 in 2022 has disappeared”

Nico Hulkenberg admits that his last chance to return to Formula One in 2022 has passed him by, and his career in the sport is set to come to an end.

Nico Hulkenberg, who had been out of Formula One for two seasons, had planned to return full-time in 2022. And returning to his previous Williams was seen as Hülkenberg’s best opportunity.

However, after George Russell left for Mercedes in 2022, Williams stated that Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi would be hired as 2022 drivers. This week, that option is no longer available.

Alfa Romeo still has a chance, but many young teams, including Mercedes-backed Nyck de Vries, Alpine F1 training driver Guanyu Zhou, and Sauber training Theo Pruscia, are supporting them. Valtteri Bottas is expected to be partnered with a young driver by the team.

Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll, who were sick with the new coronavirus, were replaced when the team was known as Racing Point last year, and Nico Hulkenberg is currently the official reserve driver for Alton Martin F1. He took part in three races altogether.

It has not yet been officially announced whether Sebastian Vettel will continue in F1 in 2022, but Nico Hulkenberg thinks all the doors are closed to him.

“We haven’t negotiated with Alfa Romeo,” Nico Hulkenberg confirmed to Bild.

“I think it was the last choice for the 2022 Permant Sheet after everything else was filled.”

“Life goes on. There are exciting requests from other motorsport series, so you don’t have to rush to make a decision. I’ll sort everything out and see what happens.”

Nico Hulkenberg claimed in July that if he doesn’t earn an F1 seat by 2022, “the F1 chapter will be closed for me,” but that appears to be true now.

The world of endurance racing, where Nico Hulkenberg won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2015, seemed to be a natural next step for him, although he may follow Marcus Ericsson and Romain Grosjean to IndyCar.

Nico Hulkenberg was reported to have began talks with Ed Carpenter Racing to compete in road and street course races in early August.

In his F1 career, Nico Hulkenberg has 521 points but has yet to reach the podium, and he owns the unwanted F1 podium non-stage record of 179 races.

He had a chance to break the record at the 2010 F1 Brazilian Grand Prix while racing for Williams. In the rain-affected qualifying session, he took pole position, but he finished eighth in the race.
