Marc Marquez Will Not Compete in the 2021 MotoGP Races

Marc Marquez, the six-time MotoGP champion, will not compete in the 2021 season.

Following an review by the medical team monitoring his recovery from a broken humerus sustained at the first MotoGP event of 2020, the decision was made to postpone his return until after the two Qatar rounds.

Marquez had already spent time on MotoGP tracks, having spent a day in Barcelona on a Honda RC213V-S street bike, followed by another day in Portugal at the Portimo circuit.

Despite Marquez’s outstanding improvement and his arm’s encouraging response to him increasing his training, the medical team decided it was best to advise Marquez to skip the first two races to give his arm more time to heal and his humerus’ bone density to improve and acquire strength.

Marquez’s next medical examination is set for April 12th, a week before the MotoGP round in Portugal. That means Marquez will also miss the second round in Qatar, which is scheduled for April 4th, but he could make a comeback in Portugal.

Marquez indicated clearly during the debut of the Repsol Honda team that he would listen to his doctors and follow their advise.

However, there were doubts about this because the Spaniard had already traveled out to Qatar to get vaccinated and appeared in the hotel gym to show the other riders that he was serious about returning.

The question was whether Marquez would be able to resist the temptation to jump on a MotoGP bike and give it a go if he was already in Qatar.

With this announcement, Marquez has demonstrated that he is sticking to the previously agreed-upon plan.

He’ll most certainly have learned from his failed effort at an early return at the Andalusian round, only a few days after breaking his arm and having it plated again, which resulted in an infection on the bone and a badly weakened humerus, forcing him to miss the entire 2020 season.

When he returns, he’ll be even more determined and likely to be at full strength as a result of this.
