Pol Espargaro storms to shock Silverstone pole ahead of Bagnaia

Pol Espargaro snatched first place for Honda at Silverstone after a last effort to hold off Francesco Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo.

Despite struggling to make an impact in his first season with Honda, Espargaro looked to have found something around the curves of the British venue from the start of the weekend, going fourth fastest in the initial runs-though Quartararo’s 1:58.990s would be hard to beat.

On his final effort, the 2013 Moto2 world champion came out battling and raced through the line to lead the timesheets by 0.101s over the Yamaha rider, though he would shortly be overtaken by Jorge Martin’s Pramac Ducati.

The Styrian Grand Prix winner’s time would not last long because it was discovered that he had started his lap at Vale on the faster layout of the Silverstone track, shaving well over a second off his time and ultimately leading to his 1:58.008s-this tour being deleted after the flag.

Due to a difficult last run, Quartararo was unable to improve, allowing Espargaro to enjoy his first pole for Honda—he had previously won two poles with KTM—while Bagnaia of Ducati took second, with Quartararo relegated to third to complete the front row.

Martin’s previous best performance was enough to maintain him fourth ahead of Marc Marquez, while Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro finished sixth on the grid for the British Grand Prix.

After topping FP3 on Saturday morning, Jack Miller was only seventh, while Valentino Rossi continued to show the better performance he had unlocked throughout the weekend, slotting his Petronas SRT-run Yamaha into eighth place ahead of leading Q1-runner Johann Zarco.

The Pramac driver recovered from a disappointing first attempt in qualifying, which left him nearly two tenths behind early leader Enea Bastinaini, to set a scorching 1:59.288s, which was good enough for him to win the session by 0.221s over Suzuki’s Alex Rins.

Bastinanini crashed on his final effort while attempting to improve, costing the rest of the race a lap because he was the first bike on track—though the most of the field managed to improve on their final gambits.

Despite being shuffled out of Q2, the Italian managed to finish 13th overall, with Rins only 0.044s ahead of him.

As Q2 came to a close, his pole shootout graduation did nothing to aid him, as he could only finish in the top ten, just behind Zarco. Suzuki’s qualifying woes appeared to be back, with team-mate Joan Mir only 11th ahead of KTM’s recently-victorious Brad Binder.

Takaaki Nakagami struggled for speed throughout Q1 and had to settle for 15th, while home hero Cal Crutchlow failed to re-capture his FP3 form en route to 19th on the grid-while Jake Dixon continued to show decent improvement as he posted his best lap of the weekend-a 2:00.869s only 1.5 seconds behind Zarco, putting him in 21st for his maiden British MotoGP race.
