At Silverstone, Pol Espargaro takes pole, with Quartararo third

Reuters, August 28 – After setting the best time in qualifying at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Saturday, Pol Espargaro secured his first pole position as a Repsol Honda rider.

The Spaniard qualified first, ahead of Francesco Bagnaia of Ducati and Fabio Quartararo of Yamaha, who leads the world championship.

In a dramatic finish to qualifying, Pramac Racing rookie Jorge Martin appeared to be on his way to pole by a healthy margin of 0.881 seconds, but his final lap time was cancelled after it was discovered that he had cut the chicane at the Vale section of the Silverstone circuit, dropping him to fourth.

Marc Marquez of Repsol Honda and Aleix Espargaro of Aprilia will be joining Martin in the second row.

After exceeding track limits earlier in Q2, Marquez waited until the last minute to produce a qualifying time, while Suzuki’s defending world champion Joan Mir set the early pace in the session but will start 11th.

On his Petronas Yamaha, former world champion Valentino Rossi, who is slated to retire at the end of the season, will start eighth.
