Chase Elliott is pushed to the back of the field for Go Bowling at The Glen due to penalties

Chase Elliott

Chase Elliott’s attempt to win the Go Bowling at The Glen for the third time proved more difficult late Sunday morning when his team was punished with multiple penalties, sending his car to the back of the 37-car field.

Elliott’s No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet failed pre-race inspection twice, earning him L1 penalties for breaking rules 20.4.8.3a and 20.4.8.3.b, according to NASCAR (rear-window air deflectors).

Elliott’s crew chief, Alan Gustafson, was ejected as the car moved from the No. 11 starting slot to the back. In addition to the $25,000 fine, Elliott was docked 10 driver points and the team was penalized 10 owner points.

Christopher Bell’s No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota received the same L1 penalties as Elliott, with crew chief Adam Stevens being dismissed from the race. Bell was supposed to start in the seventh position.

Elliott won his first Cup Series race at Watkins Glen in 2018, and he successfully defended his title in 2019. Because of the pandemic, there was no race last year.
