Valentino Rossi (born February 16, 1979) is a nine-time Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Champion and former professional motorcycle road racer from Italy. With both Honda and Yamaha, he won World Championships in the premier class. With nine Grand Prix World Championships to his name, seven of which were in the premier 500cc/MotoGP class, he is widely regarded as one of the best motorcycle racers of all time. He is also the only road racer to have competed in 400 Grands Prix or more, and wore the number 46 throughout his career. He had previously requested that the race number continues to be used in upcoming seasons, and not retired.
Rossi returned to Yamaha in 2013, finishing fourth in the standings, then placing fourth three times in a row in 2014, 2015, and 2016. In 2015, he had the best opportunity of winning a tenth championship, leading the standings for the majority of the season until finishing five points behind eventual champion Jorge Lorenzo. In the age of 38, he won his final race at the 2017 Dutch TT, earning him nearly 200 points in the championship. He switched to Petronas SRT for 2021 after three winless seasons with the factory Yamaha team, retiring after only one season with the satellite Yamaha team and failing to finish on the podium for the first time in his 26-year Grand Prix career. Rossi was the dominant force in MotoGP in the 2000s, winning all seven of the sport’s championships, as well as 77 race wins and 48 pole positions. He won 12 races and earned seven pole positions over the next 12 seasons. Rossi was the 6th most successful rider in terms of total race victories during this time.
