Marc Marquez’s Challenging MOTOGP return: Is it Honda or is it him?

Marc Marquez’s comeback to MotoGP should be the start of Honda’s return to form… but it’s really increasing the team’s troubles.

Marc Marquez has raced in MotoGP for the first time in five months, 10 months after the accident at the opening of the postponed 2020 season in Jerez that caused the arm injury that ended his hopes of a seventh title in eight years.

The Spaniard made it clear at the time that he was still in the final portion of what had been a long, arduous, and no doubt painful recovery process, but he has persevered since there is no replacement for actual racing when it comes to match fitness.

He soldiered, finishing seventh in his comeback event and ninth after that, both notable results given the circumstances.

While few would argue that Marquez is fully fit, a string of incidents – three in the last three races – has refocused attention on Honda, raising concerns that it has lost its way in development without its talisman.

Without a certain, Marquez is not the rider we saw throughout the 2019 MotoGP season, when he was not only dominant but also had the confidence to play with his rivals, dragging out battles knowing full well that he had another 10% in hand to sneak them across the finish line. He might have disappeared into the distance, like Casey Stoner did (not popular), or he could have fun and do it for a show, as Valentino Rossi did, but both options were psychologically demoralizing for rivals.
