Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A. is the motorbike division of the Italian firm Ducati, which is based in Bologna. Lamborghini owns the firm through its German parent company Audi, which is part of the Volkswagen Group.
After a 30-year absence, Ducati returned to Grand Prix motorcycle racing in 2003. Casey Stoner and Ducati won their first Grand Prix World Championship on September 23, 2007. When Ducati returned to MotoGP in 2003, the rules had been altered to allow four-stroke 990 cc engines to compete. Ducati was the quickest motorcycle at the time. MotoGP reduced the engine size to 800 cc (49 cu in) in 2007, and Ducati remained the fastest with a bike that was far faster than its competitors, as demonstrated by Casey Stoner on long straights.
Former World Champions Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden rode the Ducati Marlboro Team’s Desmosedici GP9 in 2009. Pramac Racing used Ducati customer bikes in 2009, with Mika Kallio and Niccol Canepa riding for the team.
Valentino Rossi, a nine-time world champion, rode for Ducati Corse in 2011 and 2012. For the 2013 season, Rossi rejoined the Yamaha team.
